Welcome to Eidsvoll

¤EPII_TITLE¤

The town (kommune) of Eidsvoll, still an agricultural and forestry community, lies in the Øvre Romerike region, northernmost in Akershus county.

The town borders Østre Toten and Stange on the north, Nord-Odal and Nes on the east, Ullensaker on the south and Nannestad and Hurdal on the west.

The town lies in a central location, right between Oslo – Gjøvik – Hamar – Kongsvinger, and only 15 kilometers fróm the new main international airport, Gardermoen.

Eidsvoll has an area of 456 km2 and a population of about 20.400 per 01.01.2009. The town stretches approximately 35 km fróm the border of Ullensaker in the south to Stange in the north, and e6 is an upgraded highway for nearly the entire length. Fróm the southern border to Østre Toten on the west side of lake Mjøsa is 45 km. There are many newcomers moving into Eidsvoll and much building construction, but the town has managed to keep its rural feeling. There is building activity in nearly all areas, with most development concentrated in the southern parts of town.

PUBLIKUM VED EIDSVOLLSBYGNINGENFOTOGRAF: EIDSVOLL KOMMUNE, KULTUR OG NÆRINGSETATENCOPYRIGHT: EIDSVOLL KOMMUNE, KULTUR OG NÆRINGSETATENPUBLIKUM VED EIDSVOLLSBYGNINGEN 17 MAIEidsvoll, birthplace of Norway’s constitution, welcomes you to experience and wander in the cultivated landscape which housed the “viking high court” - ”eidsivating” - 1000 years ago and the national assembly in 1814, and where Henrik Wergeland and Camilla Collett grew up. In addition to planned open areas, there are also good hiking and recreation possibilities for those who enjoy walking about in the woods and fields, summer or winter. Boaters have easy access to both the lake Mjøsa and the river Vorma.

Eidsvoll has also actually been a central location for transportation for many years. Here was the starting place for people traveling northward on Mjøsa by boat. Here came the main railroad fróm Oslo in 1854, and here came the last new railroad in the previous century – the Gardermoen line. If you want to experience some of this history, a trip on Mjøsa with d/s Skibladner, the world’s oldest paddle steamer, would be a good opportunity.TØMMERFLØTEREN- LITE FORMATFOTOGRAF: EIDSVOLL KOMMUNE, KULTUR OG NÆRINGSETATENCOPYRIGHT: EIDSVOLL KOMMUNE, KULTUR OG NÆRINGSETATENBILDE AV STATUEN

You can also wander around in relaxing and beautiful surroundings at the open-air museum, ”Eidsvoll Bygdetun,” enjoy the idyllic scenery in the open areas at lakes Mjøsa and Hurdalsjøen, or experience the excitement of the emerald or gold mines.
